What is the Future of Electronica?

I remember the first time we saw the classic silent movie Metropolis by Fritz Lang. If you haven’t heard of Metropolis or if you haven’t seen any outtakes from that movie, please, by all means, go to YouTube and load a full version of the movie. It’s a silent movie but, believe me, the fact that it is silent makes it all the more powerful.

The reason why I raise the issue of Metropolis and its kind of schizophrenic depiction of the future is that a lot of the internal issues raised by that movie regarding artistry, authenticity, emotional honesty and electronic expression haven’t really been fully resolved. There is just something about the industrial process that throws too many academics and artists off. They think machines and industry have to be anti-people or at least somewhat anti-natural. This really is too bad because the future is a symbiosis-a partnership if you will between man and machine. Instead of machines replacing people, they exist to enhance people. Nothing wrong with that.

For the longest time, there is an ongoing philosophy in many circles in the United States and Western Europe that real art has to be manual. That’s right. A real artist has to roll up his or her sleeves and work up a sweat for the work product that artist comes up with to be considered art. That was the party line for a long time. That was the conventional wisdom.

Well, no other than Mr. Andy Warhol himself turned that model on its head. He had his assistant silkscreen Marilyn Monroe on wood blocks and others surfaces and, guess what, people are paying millions of dollars for stuff that Mr. Andy Warhol himself did not personally produce. In other words, Andy Warhol destroyed the legacy of Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt and all the great masters.

The whole idea here is not so much plagiarism or mass-produced art, but the power of ideas. In other words, as long as the master or the artist, the named entity comes up with the idea, it doesn’t really matter who actually carries it out.

This is the heart of the interplay and the anxiety between music and technology that first saw its disturbing glimmers and manifestations in the movie Metropolis, and it continues to haunt electronic dance music today.

Is the fact that the DJ is not playing guitars or banging around drums or singing make electronic dance music less of an art form? This may seem very juvenile and superficial at some level, and it is. It really is quite sad that the musical criticism surrounding Electronica really hasn’t matured past that stage.

Let’s hope it breaks through sooner rather than later. At the very least, at least catch up with the state of art criticism and the intelligentsia surrounding and informing the representational art world. It’s a matter of time.

What Makes EDM so Sublime?

You’re probably rolling your eyes at the title of this blog post. After all, the word “sublime” is not usually mentioned in the same breath or even the same sentence as electronic dance music. While electronic dance music is very bouncy and it does get your emotional side going, it is quite a stretch in the minds of too many musical critics to use the word “sublime” for electronic dance music.

Usually, they reserve that adjective for music that supposedly transports your soul. This is music that is supposed to get you in contact or in the same space psychologically and emotionally as your better angels.

In the other words, sublime music is supposed to be everything that is transcendent about the human condition. It’s about everything that dissolves walls and reaches for something higher, better and more long-lasting.

Well, that is the fantasy. You have to understand that people talk a big game when it comes to artistic theory but, at the end of the day, the real art is the one that people live out. If that is going to be the critical parameters that we’re going to use when we’re trying to slice and dice all sorts of artistic expressions and musical movements, electronic dance music more than qualifies for being sublime.

Let’s get real here. Let’s get honest. If you are in any way, shape or form addressing this issue with even the most modest amount of honesty and authenticity, you would have to agree because when people make electronic dance music, it’s not like they’re just using some sort of template. It’s not like they’re using some sort of a musical version of a cookie cutter and just cranking out one all-too-forgettable piece of music after another.

It doesn’t work that way. Although it’s caricatured that way by a lot of critics like Henry Rollins, there’s a lot Mr. Rollins fails to see. In fact, in many cases, he engages in straw man arguments because he would create this cartoon version of an electronic dance music that is a far cry from its actual reality and proceed to ridicule it, dismiss it, marginalize it and otherwise bash it down. Great job knocking down the straw man, but you haven’t touched the reality of electronic dance music.

There’s a reason why so many people from all walks of life and from all four corners of the globe are so musically and emotionally invested in electronic dance music. This is the essence of being sublime because if something is able to connect with you on a raw spiritual level, you can’t help but sit up and pay attention.

You can’t help but conclude that somehow, some way that thing is real, that deserves respect, that deserves attention, that deserves critical space. It cannot be dismissed. It cannot be intimidated so as to go away. It has its own agenda, and it will not be denied.

That’s what makes it so sublime. It just gets at you from a raw, emotional level, which transcends time because if you look at classic electronic dance music from the 1970s like Giorgio Moroder’s work for the movie The Chase. It really is mind-blowing because it’s like you’re listening to music that just got composed yesterday.

There is a sublime factor in electronic dance music that really gets into our emotional DNA. It’s a guilty pleasure because it really cannot be sliced and diced in a rational and logical way, but it’s there and that’s what’s so comforting about it.

Is There Life for Electronic Music Outside of Dance?

For the longest time a lot of critics are saying that electronic dance music doesn’t really rise to the level of artistic music. While you’re probably not going to come across some serious critic who is convinced that electronic dance music is not music, it’s also quite rare to find a critic who can be convinced that electronic music is serious.

There’s a kind of dichotomy here. On the one hand, critics are quick to conclude that electronic dance music is music. It does deserve respect to be studied as music.

However, the problem is that’s not enough. We are looking for something more. We are looking for this genre of music to be given the respect that it’s due. In other words, electronic dance music, for all its baggage and historical trappings and cultural adornment, is an art form, and it deserves to be treated as such.

This is where a lot of the debates come in because a lot of critics would say that it really doesn’t have much of a life outside of the dance floor. They point to the fact that regardless of which electronic music band or act you care to analyze, a lot of their older work simply falls flat when you compare it to today’s music. In fact, even heavyweights like Yaz are often made examples of how electronic dance music is historically flat, shallow and ultimately doesn’t really would stand the test of time.

While it is true that Depeche Mode and Yaz do have very bouncy and catchy rhythms and beats from the past, there’s quite a bit of a debate whether that is good enough. There is quite a bit of a disagreement whether that arises to the level of hardcore, pure art.

I think this really boils down to snobbishness. That’s really what it all boils down to. Just because people are dancing doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re not enjoying art. Just because people take drugs on the dance floor so they can dance longer and have a great time doesn’t necessarily mean that what they’re engaged in is in any way less deserving of respect and critical analysis than higher forms of art like opera and going to the museum.

This really is a form of discrimination in terms of high art and low culture. We thought that a lot of this discrimination has been done away with. In large measure, we’re making great progress.

However, there are still pockets of resistance there and, believe me, electronic dance music and the critical snobbishness that it often encounters is one such example. It really is a reminder not all the walls separating, dissecting, slicing and dicing our culture have truly come down. There’s still quite a bit of work to do.

What is Kraftwerk’s Influence on Electronic Dance Music?

Usually, when people think about electronic dance music or electronica, very few people think about nostalgia. People normally don’t look back. If anything, they always look towards the future. It’s easy to see why this is the case because among all the different musical forms out there, electronica is probably the most future-oriented. It’s always looking for bigger, newer and more groundbreaking sounds.

However, as the old saying goes, if you don’t look to where you’ve been, you probably will not get to where you want to go. It always is a good idea to look at the past to see patterns and connect the dots so you can be inspired to go where you need to go as far as musical innovation is concerned. Seemed like a good idea then and it’s a good idea now.

None of this means that we should look to the past and just get all nostalgic and say that great music was only restricted to a certain historical period. That’s the kind of sentiment you get when you read YouTube video comments. There are tons of those comments, whether they’re talking about The Godfather I or a great movie from the past or, in this case, great music.

Sure, there was a great art from the past, but the awesome thing about art is that it’s timeless. It’s meant to be stepped on. In other words, it’s meant to support newer and better things. It pushes people to live up to their fullest potential, and this means reinventing the past, coming up with something new and imagining a better future.

We would really be doing the past and the innovators of the past a really big disservice if we think that our best days are behind us. No, they’re not. They’re always in the future, and this is the reality that we really have to wrap our minds around when it comes to the influential work of Kraftwerk.

Don’t get me wrong. There are tons of friends who are convinced that Kraftwerk is the best electronica group ever. They are saying that none will exceed their work. This may well be true when it comes to innovation and inspiration, but this is doesn’t mean that we should just stop innovating. This doesn’t mean that we should just close off our creative borders and call it a day.

If anything, the founding members of Kraftwerk would be the first ones to push us forward and upward regarding the upper limits of electronic music creativity. They may have laid a foundation, but that’s all it is. It’s a foundation, and just like any foundation, it can be expanded, it can be taken up and it can reach out to new territory. That’s what we should focus on.

Kraftwerk is very influential. They laid the groundwork but, most importantly, they gave us a hunger for anything and everything related to pushing boundaries. That is their greatest legacy. Let’s not drop the ball and get all nostalgic.

The worst thing that we can do to Kraftwerk legacy, as far as electronica is concerned, is to idolize are somehow restrict our creative explorations within the historical boundaries that Kraftwerk has pioneered. They really took our type of music to a certain extent, and it’s our job to grab that baton as it’s passed to us and take it to a whole other level and pass it to other DJs and musical impresarios that we meet along the way.

That’s how progress is made. That is how music expands and goes on living.
